Week one: find the shutoffs
Water, electrical, and gas. Operate each one if it is safe to do so, then map and photograph it. Do this before you unpack the kitchen.

Furnace, water heater, well or water service, septic or sewer connection, sump pump, and anything with a model plate.

Week three: collect the paperwork
Inspection report, permits, well log, septic diagram, appliance manuals, and whatever the seller left behind.

Filters, detector batteries, gutters, seasonal service. Enter them once as recurring tasks and stop tracking them by memory.

- Locate and photograph the main water shutoff
- Locate the main electrical disconnect and label the panel
- Locate the gas or propane shutoff
- Photograph every model and serial plate
- Record the age of the roof, furnace, and water heater
- Find the septic lid or the sewer cleanout
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
- Save the inspection report and any permits
- Note the well log or water service details
- Record utility accounts and meter locations
- Map the crawlspace or attic access
- Write down the trades the previous owner used
